Let’s Play Live!
So we were all decked out in our achieve shirts ready to go to Let’s Play Live, an event in New York being streamed to theaters all over the country, including Asheville. It’s put on by Rooster Teeth and focused on Achievement Hunter, FunHaus, and Cow Chop. It was three hours long and I enjoyed it so much. Here’s the breakdown.
It started with Achievement Hunter playing GTA, and it was so much fun. It took a moment to get used to the filming style but as soon as you adjusted it felt like their GTA heists on their channel. It feels like we got an extra heist and that was a lovely little bonus.
Cow Chop was also pretending to be Russian throughout the entire show. This one gentleman reminded me of the Hawkeye Russians.
And something that made me particularly happy was one of the stage hands/ tech guys had on a 2015 Guardian T-shirt. Which is specifically thrilling because that’s the same year I was a Guardian for the first time. (Hoping to be one this coming year!)
Garry's Mod: Murder was fun to watch, it was the beginning of the audience in the theatre with me yelling at the screen for them to ‘run’ or ‘look out!’ Cow Chop proved that once again camping is a legitimate strategy.
Then Cow Chop played a game that looked like Happy Wheels but in 3D. Regardless, it seemed to be chosen by one of the Cow Chop members, leaving the other Cow Chop members confused as to how to play and the rules. This made it frustrating for both the audience and seemingly Cow Chop. Who were still using Russian accents.
After which one of the members of FunHaus, Bruce Greene gave the challenge that someone in the audience could shave his head if he could shave theirs. A young woman came up game for the challenge. She butchered his hair; it was amazingly funny as Bruce kept yelling ‘WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE?’ at the audience as his hair cut slowly dissipated into a mistake. Finally fed up with this girl’s attempt, he had her sit down. She did, ready to have her head shaved when the MC, Jack, came up and told them they were running short on time and needed to move on, saving the girl’s (very pretty) hair. It was funny and well done. One of my favorite parts of the show.
After Achievement Hunter and FunHaus played a game that seemed like multiplayer diner dash. It was very confusing keeping track of who on screen was who, but the gamers themselves seemed to be having such a good time that you couldn’t help root for them even if you were a little bit behind in what the hell was actually happening.
Cow Chop then did another little skit, still pretending to be Russian and hating America. At this point it was overdone, and just seemed like it was time for Cow Chop to be themselves, but they continued in accent and hating America. Ha. Ha. So funny.
FunHaus then played a game where they were supposed to be defusing a fake bomb, four members went through papers trying to find the right codes to stop it from blowing up while one member stood at the actual screen that the others couldn’t see and entered said codes. The audience could also see the screen and since the member (Lawrence) that could see the screen wasn’t being overly helpful the audience participated. Loudly. It was very fun I think for both performers and audience. A good sketch.
Members of the three companies then assembled to play Dead by Daylight. Which was one of the most stressful games. During which one member of Achievement Hunter was dressed in a sexy nurse costume. Apparently the game had released a nurse character (a scary one) in game and when they asked for someone to dress as a nurse, the memo got a bit mixed up and we get one of my favorite things. A very drunk Michael Jones peering over the shoulders of some very tense gamers in a sexy nurse costume. Amazing.
The Achievement Hunter’s then proceeded to play Cloudberry Kingdom. The audience rooted loudly for Jack. All the while Gavin kept asking Ryan if he had various things in his house. I have no idea if this is just a game they play but he asked if he had black olives and lube. Ryan has both, and Jack never beat the level they were playing. Very fun to watch.
Next Cow Chop and FunHaus played Depth, and before they began a member of Cow Chopped said “In my country (fake Russia) we don’t let girls play video games.” And at this point the Russian bit was already pissing me off and that sort of was the final straw. This was my first introduction to Cow Chop and I was super disappointed they weren’t a group I could get excited about like when Let’s Play added FunHaus, instead I just wanted them to get off stage.
Finally we will touch on the game Ultimate Chicken Horse. I’d never heard of it but it was easy to pick up on and a joy to watch. At this point the theater I was in was actively screaming at the screen, cheering and booing and all in all very invested at this point. It was probably my favorite thing over all, the head shaving being the second.
Woo. That’s a lot of words. I had a great time at Let’s Play Live, even if the screen did flicker off a bunch and Cow Chop got annoying (I know they were playing a part but still), I would absolutely go again. It’s made me very excited for RTX 2017 and what’s in store for Rooster Teeth in general. Also shout-out to that girl in the Mad King Ryan Achieve shirt. You were awesome.
