Baby Knife was a comic given to us by Woolly Press. Part of what we do here is comics se we decided to go ahead and review it.
Baby Knife (Writer: Guy F Mead Artist: Jesse H Mead) is an interesting read, to say the least. I am told that it is an offshoot of a larger piece, introducing the character of Baby Knife before their appearance in the main comic.
There are some seriously beautiful and humorous turns of phrase along the way, mostly within internal dialogue. I found the character of Baby Knife quite interesting, especially the juxtaposition of the complex internal monologue with their more simple, cat-like actions and dialogue. I find myself curious both about the character's story arc beyond this intro as well as what's going on in the main comic itself.
Of course, there are a few things I have trouble with. As an offshoot comic, I definitely feel as if I missed something not having read the main story. What I did see in the comic showed me some of the rules of this world. Not all, of course, making it easy to misunderstand and/or misinterpret. For instance, the only other character in the story, who was referred to as 'the turtle hag', threw me for a loop. She decides, for no discernible reason(other than to tantalize the reader, and Baby Knife), to transform into a buxom, scantily clad human woman. Very little in this comic seems without reason, so I must guess that this is a character I would have met before had I been reading the main storyline.
All-in-all, Baby Knife was a good read, and a compelling story. I am definitely interested in checking out the main storyline by Guy Mead, and answering some of my questions about the world these characters inhabit. And that's successful as hell in my book.
