I Thought I'd Learned
So I'm the anxious one that arrives way too early for things and has to wait an hour because that just happens to be my personality. So I convinced John we needed to leave for Dragon*Con Wednesday. And, bless his soul, he gave into my madness and drove down with me Wednesday after he got off his eight hour shift.
So to start with, we had a room with this gentlemen we had never met but had been recommended to us by a friend. Eagerly we agreed since we did not have other accommodations and were even more excited when they offered us an air mattress rather then sleeping on the floor.
Then, because I rolled a 3 when doing a Wisdom check, I didn't notice something was off, and something went wrong. I got an urgent text from this gentlemen, telling me that due to unfortunate circumstances, we would not have a room.
So I rolled again and got lucky and contacted my Kind Friend in Decatur, GA and asked to sleep on their dorm room floor. They said yes and I bought an air mattress. So John and I are taking the Marta in to the con that we walked just under a mile to, every day. Then Saturday night I noticed my Kind Friend seemed nervous.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Well there is this rule I didn't mention...we aren't really supposed to have people stay in our room more then three nights...and my RA is kind of a Dickbutt."
Not wanting to get Kind Friend in trouble, John and I packed the night before, got the car ready, and was texting our friends to see where we could park the car so we could sleep in it in relative darkness but still a safe area.
When suddenly my mother descended from the sky and said, "Fear not. For I have provided," and booked a hotel that really we should have just chosen from the start.
So we drove to the hotel. On the drive there we discussed the fact that in this hotel we could:
- Shower without John having to go to another building entirely. (As the college was an all girls school.)
- Also not have to go down three flights of stairs to use the bathroom.
- Leave and come back whenever we wanted
- Mini fridge
- Not have to hide the alcohol we brought with us. (One shitty bottle of wine. I ended up dumping most of it.)
- Space to walk around the bed.
- A 0.3 mile walk to the Marta station
My mother is not one for handouts. She is kind and loving and good and perfect, but generally she is still trying remember that I've left the house and she can't always be my safety net. Well thankfully that whole rule totally slipped her mind and we were blessed with two nights in a hotel that we definitely did not steal the luggage cart and kept in our room till we left.
So that's only the lodging of Dragon*Con. Bet you're excited for Part Two, which is about the actual fucking Con.
Book your own damn hotel room kids, just do it.
